An attempt for come back to the mainstream

hopeIt is after a long while I’ve re-visited my blog. When I opened it I literally got surprised to notice that the last post made by me was around 1 and half years back!  Every netizens must have a web presence, for few of them it would be through their own webpages/blogs, many others it would be through Facebook or Twitter pages. Yes, and myself belonging to the second group for the past one year, and it was through my Twitter page. I think I was extremely busy there discussing about various technical especially related to mobiles. I’ve almost forgotten about this little blog of mine.

At that time when I’d started this blog there wasn’t any particular reason behind. Now I think it is time to move on and do something fruitful. Hope I’ll be able to do regular contributions here! Stopping this post here for now, by hoping to see you all on the next good one!

Facinate – A Free Qt based Symbian Facebook application

Today I came across a Facebook application from NokiaStore! There aren’t much Facebook application for Symbian with full features of Facebook. Among them not many are free too. This application is free but it uses advertisements. The application has incorporated most of the features of Facebook, like news feed, friends, messages, chat, birthday, my wall, photos, notifications, events etc. The UI is pretty easy to use.

Here are few screen shots:

The below screens will help to choose different features of Facebook:

This application supports Push notifications:

Tips to make few extra followers and maintain the existing followers count in Twitter!

Who is not happy increasing ones Twitter followers? But getting followers is not that easy in Twitter. In Facebook most of the people in your friends list would be familiar to you in person while in Twitter you might not know most of the followers personally. And it is not one or two days/weeks effort to build a good list of followers in Twitter. It might take months to get some good amount of stable followers. Unlike Facebook there is a great chance a follower may unfollow you, it could be like you are not posting the expected tweets of the other person, or the follower didn’t find the subject of post interesting and many.

I personally had an experience, a person who followed me whom I know personally very well one day that person had DM me that my tweets are irrelevant so unfollowing me. This is a know unfollow but many a times people unfollowed with out any notice.

I’m going to give few tips to build and maintain the followers count. Please note that this may not work every time for everyone, these are just my personal experience, so after reading this you yourself judge and try if it is really feasible for you to try.

1. Good Bio: Create a good Bio according to your interest, not provide more personal details, but give your key interests and some web link to your profile which is good if possible. And add an avatar either your own picture of what ever you like or which express about your likes or personality.

2. Follow Tweeples: As I told you in the beginning, getting followers for a newcomer in Twitter is pretty difficult if your’re not a celebrity or a person publicly well know. So the first step is follow few people whom Twitter itself might suggest and slowly make a good friends list. Be cautious before follow the person, most of the time the Bio of the person and the previous tweets would give a rough idea about that person.

3. Tweet Periodically: Next thing is try to tweet about you, technology, news what ever it comes with in your interest and build up your own tweeting style. As you know that Twitter is also called as a Micro Blog.

4. More interaction: In twitter most of the people would like to be interacted, so interaction plays an important role here. As much as possible interact with your friends and try to build a familiarity with them.

5. Express Thanks & Great: If some one followed you just check if that is really a person or not a BOT and if it seems to be some individual person then start interaction with them by expressing your thankfulness of them following you. And never forget to great your friends and followers in various occasions.

6. Discussion: You can take part in the discussion of other Tweeples in between their discussion and make them feel of comfortable with you.

7. FollowFriday:  It is another good tool you must use wisely. Try to mention the most interacting or admired or interested handles for FollowFriday. That way the other person will also recognize you and there will be mutual respect between both!

8. No Offence or Unnecessary Arguments: Never try to use offensive statements or indulge in unnecessary arguments with others. This would cause the other person would unfollow you. Try to understand every person has the right to express their opinion, and more over these days the social medias are well known platforms for that. So respect other opinions, not telling to accept it blindly, you could also express your opinion in a friendly way.

9. Use DM effectively: Always use the DM to talk about very personal matters, never open it up in the timeline.

10. Don’t SPAM: If you’ve a decent amount of followers please alwasy keep it in mind that your tweets will appear in their Timeline, so be decent here and never try to SPAM their timeline.

11. Avoid Over RE-Tweet: Though Twitter has an option to individually prevernt re-tweet to be appeared on one Timeline, many would not do that or ignorant on that part. So immediate action what they may take is unfollow. So be peculiar in re-tweeting.

12. Use of Language: Maximum try to use the common language, in case if you’ve wide range of people as followers from all over the world please use English.

13. Hash Tags: Use Hash Tags where ever you feel suited, for example if the matter of tweeter is something related to technology use a hash tag for the main terminology. The hash tag will help in two ways, one is your tweets will get a wide audience through search and there are chances someone would come and follow you only because of the tweets you hash tagged is interesting to the other person. And secondly the exiting followers also can skip some of your tweets if you properly hash tag it.

14. Use of Lists: Making list is another good practice in Twitter, so that the other person would feel good on you and may follow you later. And which will ever help in many scenarios for you too. Its a good tool to filter and read only interested peoples tweets.

15. Limit Forusquare Update: Limit or avoid the automatic updates from Forusquare and similar kind of services. The flood of tweets from these services may causing spamming your followers Timeline.

So these all there in my mind at the moment, happy twitting, enjoy your valuable time with your great friends and followers in Twitter! Here I’ve used few Twitter terminologies which may be new to few of you, so in that case this link would be helpful reading: Twitter Terminology – Understanding Twitter Terminology. Now to understand more tweet more and learn yourself!

NewsG – A google News Reader App for MeeGo (N9/N950)

It was accidentally I came to know about this great app – NewsG. I was searching for an app called Ask-Ziggy for MeeGo one day and from my fellow Champion Sunil Kumar (@skumar_rao) I got a link to that app. But later I realized that there is no version of that app available supporting MeeGo rather it was for Maemo.

The developer behind of Ask-Ziggy is Martin Borho (@m_b_o) I later found Martin’s contact and asked for a MeeGo version but I got not a positive reply: “unfortunately there’s no version for MeeGo, because the Google  Search API, which nearly all services depending on, is deprecated and throttled and will be switched off in the foreseeable future“.

But Martin had suggested me another app called NewsG, another one app developed by Martin!

About NewsG

NewsG is an application based on Google News. It shows the daily headlines from Google News. You can choose from the available the topics like Top Stories, World, CountryName, Business, Technology, Politics, Entertainment, Sports, Health, Spotlight, Most Popular etc.

This app can be configured pretty easily, where you can choose the edition of the news according to your wish. Select the default topic to load, Manage topics etc. This app is good choice for reading the news just from the different available categories. Though I had two improvement suggestions for this app:

1. Instead of lauching the device browser to read the complete  news the app could have it’s on view to read.

2. The integration of the feeds to the Home Screen feeds could have been a good option to have.

But after all this is a neat application a MeeGo owner can have. After all this is a free app which you can download from the NokiaStore.

Edit: Just found a link here: NewsG for N9/N950 – Daily headlines from Google News.

Nokia Qt SDK on Linux

Today I’d successfully installed Nokia Qt SDK on my Ubuntu 10.10 based laptop and was able to try a sample Qt application on it. It was an interesting experience for me, and I would like to share this with you all.

I started downloading the Nokia Qt SDK for Linux from the Forum Nokia’s Nokia Qt SDK page, but unfortunately when the download reached 561 mb of data it stopped the downloading due to some network problem and due to some system upgrade I wanted to restart the laptop and the download got canceled. The fortunate part was that the portion of download left in the directory when I reboot. Google helped me find a solution to resume the failed download, that was the curl tool. Then I realized the power of Linux. Any way the below details will be useful to setup Nokia Qt SDK on your Linux machine.

Install Pre-Requisites

Execute the below commands on your Linux (as I mentioned earlier I’d used a Ubuntu 10.10 based laptop). These are the pre-requisite before downloading and installing the Nokia Qt SDK to your machine, so if you already have these modules it is well and good you can go to the next step.

$ sudo apt-get install g++ make libSM-dev libxext-dev libxcursor-dev libfreetype6-dev libxrandr-dev libglib2.0-dev libfontconfig1-dev libxft-dev libglu-dev

By executing the above command, following packages will get installed on your machine:

g++ g++-4.4 libice-dev libsm-dev libstdc++6-4.4-dev x11proto-core-dev
libpthread-stubs0 libpthread-stubs0-dev libx11-dev libxau-dev libxcb1-dev libxdmcp-dev libxext-dev x11proto-input-dev x11proto-kb-dev x11proto-xext-dev xtrans-dev
libxcursor-dev libxfixes-dev libxrender-dev x11proto-fixes-dev x11proto-render-dev
libfreetype6-dev zlib1g-dev
libxrandr-dev x11proto-randr-dev
libglib2.0-bin libglib2.0-dev
libexpat1-dev libfontconfig1-dev
libdrm-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libglu1-mesa-dev libkms1 mesa-common-dev

Install Nokia Qt SDK

Here is the final step in the installation, execute the below commands:

$ sudo apt-get install curl
$ curl -f -L -o -C -
$ chmod +x
$ sudo ./

The last command will start the installation of Nokia Qt SDK, it is a GUI based installer, follow the instructions on the screen. Here are few screen shots for your reference:

Typically it took ~700 mb of disk-space for the total installation excluding the size of downloaded setup file (, which took exactly 591 mb.

Quick Reference

The below pages helped me during the installation:

Back to Carbide after a long break!

It was in 2007 I did some application development. As many of you might know, it was S60/Symbian platform where I was working. Surprisingly again got an interest in developing recently. So I thought of brush-up myself! Later I realized that the application development is not the same as earlier :D. It had got lot of changes. It is nice to learn all new things.

I’ve used the Carbide for the development, set up a new Symbian^3.0 SDK, installed Qt for S60 and all needed tools. It was a stupid error which invited me!

The error says exactly this message: “Cannot run program “perl.exe”: The parameter is incorrect.”. I felt so bad and stopped the development, got some routine works so was busy with some other work. Mean-while found one thread in Symbian-Forum and posted my doubt, there wasn’t any answer. After few days, that is today, came back and tried my luck. Hooray 🙂 I got a solution, it is none other than removing the EPOCROOT environment variable, which set to “/” causing the tool-chain didn’t understand the epoc32\tools :D.
